Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a temporary work authorization offered to international students who are currently studying in the United States on a student visa (F-1). The purpose of OPT is to allow students to gain practical experience in their field of study and to apply the knowledge and skills they have learned in a real-world setting.
To be eligible for OPT, students must have completed at least one academic year of full-time study at an accredited institution in the United States. The work authorization is granted for a period of up to 12 months, and it can be extended for an additional 24 months for students who have completed a degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM).
Students who are interested in applying for OPT must first obtain a recommendation from their designated school official (DSO) at their school. The DSO will then submit the request to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) on behalf of the student. Once approved, the student will receive an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) that allows them to work for any employer in the United States for the duration of their OPT.
While OPT can be a valuable opportunity for students to gain practical experience and build their professional networks, it is important to note that it does not lead to a green card or permanent residency in the United States. Students who wish to obtain a green card will need to explore other options, such as employment-based visas or sponsorship by a family member.
